What to expect when your pet is scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound:
You will not be meeting with the radiologist, but your pet will. The radiology technician will bring your pet upstairs for imaging. The report results will be sent later in the day or the next day to your referring veterinarian. Your pet’s abdomen may be shaved for this diagnostic procedure.
Abdominal Ultrasound for Pets
What is an abdominal ultrasound, and how is it performed?
An abdominal ultrasound is a 20-to-40-minute procedure used to evaluate your pet’s abdominal organs. During the examination:
- Your pet’s abdomen will be shaved.
- They will lie belly-up on a cushioned trough for comfort.
- The procedure is generally well-tolerated, but some pets may become anxious.
Does my pet need sedation for the ultrasound?
- Sedation or anesthesia is not typically required.
- If you think your pet may have difficulty tolerating the procedure, contact your primary care veterinarian to discuss oral sedation.
- Oral sedation should be administered approximately 2 hours before the appointment.
- If oral sedation is insufficient, injectable sedation may be provided by our emergency department. This requires an ER visit, which may involve an undetermined wait time.
Should I fast my pet before the ultrasound?
- Fast your pet for 10–12 hours prior to the appointment (no food, but water is allowed).
- Exception: Diabetic pets should not be fasted and should continue their usual food and insulin routine.
Will a physical exam be performed during the ultrasound appointment?
Physical exams are not conducted during outpatient ultrasound appointments. If your pet requires immediate or specialty care, please visit our emergency department for an evaluation.
Can I leave the hospital during my pet’s ultrasound?
Clients must remain in the VERG lobby for the duration of the ultrasound appointment. If you are not present at the conclusion of the procedure, a hospitalization fee will be charged.
How will I receive the ultrasound results?
- A detailed ultrasound report will be sent to your primary care veterinarian within 24–72 hours.
- Your primary care veterinarian will review the results with you.
- If urgent findings are identified, we will notify your primary care veterinarian immediately so they can contact you to discuss next steps.
What should I bring to the appointment?
When scheduling the ultrasound, provide the name of your primary care veterinarian so we can request your pet’s most recent medical records. If you have a copy of the records, please email them to records@verg-brooklyn.com.
Who can I contact if I have questions before the appointment?
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us or your primary care veterinarian for guidance. Please feel free to contact us at 718-522-9400 or records@verg-brooklyn.com.
We look forward to meeting you and your pet! Thank you for choosing VERG.
