Veterinary Externship

Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group is proud to be the most trusted provider of animal healthcare in the tri-state area. Each year, we deliver high-quality emergency and specialty care to more than 30,000 cases. We are also deeply committed to supporting the future of veterinary medicine by training the next generation of veterinarians. As part of this mission, we welcome veterinary students to participate in externships at our hospital and encourage them to apply for internships through the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program.

VERG’s externship program offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to learn and observe in a fast-paced, high-quality practice with a diverse caseload. Externs have the chance to shadow experienced doctors in both our emergency and specialty surgical departments.
Our Emergency & Critical Care service operates 24/7, providing exceptional intensive care to patients in need. We collaborate closely with our specialty departments to ensure the best possible care for hospitalized patients and work in partnership with a wide network of local primary care veterinarians.

Our specialty surgical department is led by board-certified experts. Externs will have the chance to shadow our team and gain exposure to a wide range of surgical cases including orthopedics, neurosurgery, and soft tissue procedures. In addition, our state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities include advanced imaging technologies such as ultrasound, digital radiography, CT, and MRI.

Externship opportunities are available January through May and August through December. Please note that externs will not participate in direct patient care.
